My Inspiration

In just a few days I will be presenting my six potential comic ideas, but until then I'd like to take this time to share with you what influenced these Ideas.

The first and most resent is Lauren Beukes. I first came across her work when I picked up Survivors club which has an amazing story. But it was when I picked up here novel The Shining Girls, where she influenced me as this book doesn't play in one time but many and this book has shown me how to play in different times within the same story.

Next is Stephen King, what his books have shown me is that the big bad in a horror story doesn't have to be a monster but can be man/woman or even inanimate objects like Christine. His influence can be seen in my comic Transplant which was inspired by his book Thinner.

The X-files has been the biggest influence to not just my comics but life as this show got me into the supernatural and unexplained. When I read an article that Chris Carter got his ideas for episodes from "real" stories. This inspired me to search for stories of the unexplained and adapt into my own comics. Without the X-files I wouldn't be the writer I am.
Stranger Things is a no brainer if i'm influenced by Stephen King. However what influenced me from this show was the way they they described how the upsidedown works as that is how all six of my ideas came about after watching a TED talk on String theory. So to see it in a horror show working I knew that it could work if I get the rest of the story right.

And finally Alex Hirsch influenced the way I think about what you can do with a story. The inclusion of Ciphers to enrich the viewer's experience is genies and something I've tried and will continue to do in my comics.

If you made it this far I thank you and hope you've learned what influences my work and that it may intrigue you about the Ideas I have planned.
