When i'm drawing out my pages I use references to get the figure in the position I want so when I draw they should be in the correct proportions. I also sometimes do it with backgrounds like I did with this piece.

 

I only use the positioning of the model as you can see I change the clothing of the model to suite the character in my comic, I also remove most of the detailing in the background this is because I will make it up in the coloring stage.
