Review - Program 3 issues 1&2
This review was a request from the artist themselves Luis. I have tried to be as constructive as I could. This is on here instead of Outright Geekery is because this was a request and I want to separate them.
Writer - Malcolm Banks
Artist - Luis Quinones
The Writing
Malcolm's writing here doesn't have the pay off he was hoping for and here's why. Set in the present it then proceeds to tell us why they are in that predicament. I believe that is the case as there are no indication and that's the big issue with both issues. There is a clear story at play here, however none of that is presented as we never learn the name of the main protagonist or any other info about them. The other characters we are introduced to aren't developed or fully explained.
The overall story is disjointed as we jump about in time with no full explanation for the events that happen. The dialogue falls flat here as there is no personality connected to it so you don't connect with the characters. These comics have exposition however, this doesn't really add to the overall narrative and leaves you with more questions.
The Art
The art by Luis works with the narrative at work, however it could be improved. His landscapes and establishing shot are wonderfully drawn with great use of perspective. The characters however don't always work out. They sometimes look too rigged and puppet like, where other times they have a nice flow to the characters. Like the writing setting and time is unknown this is due to the uncomfortable amount of white space. This leads to events all blending into one sequence it's hard to determine where parts are set.
The Coloring
The comic is colored in tones of grey. I quite like this as it works superbly however, the choice of technique loses quality. The comic is hand colored with some digital coloring and this inconsistency makes it difficult to appreciate the talent and craftsmanship of the tonal coloring.
Final thoughts
Program 3 is a comic that needs some work before it reaches print. These include having a clear story that is easy to follow and gives you context along the way. The art is good but with a clearer technique could be fantastic. The issues are also too short as these two issues combine to equal the length of one issue.
Art 3/5

Overall 3.5
